Africa Sports Ventures Group (ASVG) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Nilayo Sports Management Ltd, Nigeria’s leading sports marketing and event management company, to organize the Mary Onyali Classic, a world-class track and field meet scheduled for May 23rd–25th, 2026 at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
With over a decade of expertise in staging premier sporting events—including the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, the Nigerian National Sports Festival, and a host of other top-tier properties—Nilayo Sports Management Ltd, led by its dynamic CEO and Managing Director, Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, is primed to deliver an unforgettable celebration blending world-class athletics with Nigerian culture. Fans can expect a unique experience where track & field meets Afrobeats, Suya, beer, and wine in a nation with a deep passion for athletics.
Nigeria has long held a prestigious place in global track and field, producing icons such as Innocent Egbunike, Chidi Imoh, and Mary Onyali, who defined Africa’s golden generation of sprinting. The Mary Onyali Classic will build on this legacy, welcoming elite athletes from around the world alongside national teams from across Africa, making it a sporting and cultural festival like no other.
Mrs. Olopade expressed her excitement at the partnership, stating:
“Nilayo Sports Management Ltd is thrilled at the opportunity to work with ASVG to deliver a truly world-class event. We look forward to welcoming global track stars to Nigeria while showcasing our culture, passion, and excellence in sports.”
Mr. Leslie Koroma, CEO of Africa Sports Ventures Group, highlighted the significance of the collaboration:
“We are excited to partner with a local giant like Nilayo Sports Management Ltd to bring the Mary Onyali Classic to life. This meet will not only raise the bar for athletics in Nigeria but also reinforce Africa’s position in the global track and field calendar.”
Track legend Mary Onyali, who will serve as Meet Director and Global Ambassador, shared her enthusiasm:
“I am simply thankful and excited that ASVG and Nilayo Sports Management Ltd have come together to create a global-level event on Nigerian soil. The Mary Onyali Classic will inspire the next generation while celebrating our sporting and cultural heritage.”
The Mary Onyali Classic is part of the Legends Track & Field Series, a Pan-African initiative designed to bring high-level international track meets to the continent, offering athletes, fans, and communities a powerful platform for sport, culture, and economic growth.
